Zoos of Karnataka.

Zoo means an establishment, whether stationary or mobile, where captive animals are kept for exhibition to the public [and includes a circus and rescue centres but does not include an establishment] of a licensed dealer in captive animals.

The Zoo Authority of Karnataka is registered under Societies Registration Act, 1960, and functioning at Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Garden’s Premises, Mysuru. The following eight Zoos recognised by the Central Zoo Authority were brought under the control of Zoo Authority of Karnataka by a G.O. dated: 20-07-2002.

The Member Secretary in the rank of Addl. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests is the Chief Executive of Zoo Authority of Karnataka.

The main objectives of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka are:

  1. To breed and rear the endangered species of the fauna of India and the world with the object of saving them from extinction and the restocking other Zoos and eventually to enrich the depleted fauna in Wild.
  2. To Serve the cause of wildlife conservation directly by arousing in the people an interest in and concern for wildlife by organising exhibitions and seminars etc.
  3. To study the habits and behavior of animals and birds in their natural surroundings as well as in captivity.
  4. To procure such animals as are required for the Zoos in the State of Karnataka by purchase or exchange, from other states of India or from abroad.
  5. The dissemination of knowledge and information about our wildlife by publication of bulletins and journals etc.
  6. To provide technical advice for the preparation of plans and development of Zoos, Zoological Gardens.
  7. To conduct research on various problems of the animals in Zoos, Zoological Parks.
