About Karnataka Forest

Karnataka is a state in the south western region of India. It was formed on 01st November 1956. Karnataka is endowed with some of the most magnificent forests in the country. From the majestic evergreen forests of the Western Ghats to the scrub jungles of the plains, a wide variety of habitats exist with very typical flora and fauna, some of them endemic to the region. The Western Ghats, which covers about 60% of forest area of Karnataka, is recognized as one of the 18-mega bio-diversity hotspots. It has a recorded forest area of 38720 km2 which constitutes 20.19% of the total geographical area of the state. These forests support 25% of the elephant population and 20% of the tiger population of India.
