Training plays an important role in any organization in building competencies and skills in its employees for improved service delivery and better governance. There is a long tradition of imparting training to officers and frontline staff at the induction level in Forest Department. There were many Forest Guards Training Centers in different places. In the state a need was felt to have Centralized Training Institute of a high standard to meet the challenges of changing concepts and precepts of Forestry sector. Therefore Karnataka State Forest Training Institute was established in Gungaragatti near Dharwad in 1992 under World Bank Aided Forestry Project. The Main Building and other Infrastructure were completed in 1996. This Training Center is located in Forest Survey No 05 and it extends over an area of 42.16 hectors. It is about 12 km from Dharwad city. The Training of Frontline Staff of the Department started in 1996. During the year 2015-16 this Training Institution was upgraded and renamed as Karnataka State Forest Academy and Induction Training of 18 Months duration for direct recruit Range Forest Officers was started as per the Directions of Director of Forest Education Deharadun. The Training Course for the 1st Batch of Range Forest Officers commenced on 21.03.2016. The Main Building has 5 Class rooms which are being modernized with all modern teaching aids for conducting Lecture Classes and 02 computer labs. There are 04 Mess Halls, Two for Range Forest Officers and one for Deputy Range Forest Officer Cum Surveyors & one for refresher course training and now using for lakshdweep trainees. For accomadation of RFO trainees kaveri hostel 16 rooms, Krishna Hostel 16 rooms, Executive hostel 32 rooms and for DyRFO Trainees 24 dormitary rooms are there and for Lakshdweep Trainees 8 Barracks rooms are there.The Karnataka State Forest Academy has well developed administrative office, well equipped Gym, Swimming Pool, Multiutility Building and Grounds.Karnataka Forest Academy has the advantage of being in the close vicinity of Agriculture University Dharwad. The Karnataka University Dharwad and Karnataka Law University Hubli are also nearby. The Academy Campus is abuting to Forest Research Centre and Demonstration Plots. This is very useful for imparting practical training and hands on experience to the trainee Officers. There are a number of Retired Senior Forest Officers Station in Dharwad and Hubli whose service is being made use of as Guest faculty to the Training of purpose.
