Chikkamagaluru forest division is situated in the south-western part of Karnataka state. The division occupies a part of Chikkamagaluru district, the other part being occupied by Koppa forest division. The total forest area of the division is 71,863 hectares. The division has two sub-divisions, namely, Chikkamagaluru and Mudigere sub-divisions, and consists of five ranges, namely, Chikkamagaluru, Muthodi, Kadur, Mudigere and Aldur ranges. Forests of Chikkamagaluru division are widely varying from wet evergreen forests in Balur State Forest in Mudigere range to thorny scrub forests in Kadur range. Semi-evergreen and moist as well as dry deciduous forests are met with in between these two extremes, in Mudigere, Aldur, Muthodi and Chikkamagaluru ranges.
