Kundapur forest division comprises a major part of Udupi district and some portion of Dakshina Kannada district. The division comprises two sub-divisions, namely, Kundapur and Mudibidri sub-divisions, and consists of eight ranges, namely, Byndoor, Kundapur, Shankaranarayana, Udupi, Hebri, Karkala, Moodibidri and Venoor ranges. The division has 38 sections and 84 beats. The forests of the division are primarily of semi-evergreen and secondary moist deciduous types. Wet evergreen forests occur in the higher reaches of the Western Ghats towards the east. There are scrub forests in the coastal areas. Patches of mangrove are found in the estuaries of some of the rivers draining into the Arabian Sea.
