The Belagavi forest Circle had started functioning from 15-08-1947. Three Districts are coming in the jurisdiction of Belagavi circle viz., Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapur, in which 4 Territorial and 3 Social Forestry Divisions are there. There are 13 sub divisions and 48 Ranges. Total Forest area of Belagavi circle is 2834.27 Sq.Km. Khanapur taluka is situated in Southern part of the circle, which is in Western Ghats and receives rainfall of about 2000 mm and drier region such as Vijayapur, Bagalkot in the northern part of the circle, where the rainfall is about 200-300 mm. Khanapur taluka consists of wet ever green forests and scrub forests in the northern part, ie., in Vijayapur, Bagalkot and Gokak division.
There are 3 Wildlife Sanctuaries in this circle, they are Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Belagavi Division, Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary in Bagalkot Division, Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary in Gokak Division and there is a Mini Zoo at Bhutaramanhatti of Belagavi Division.
