Ghataprabha forest division, with headquarters at Gokak, is situated in the north western part of Karnataka state bordering the state of Maharashtra. The division occupies a part of Belagavi district. The total forest area of the division is in general 50772.875 hectares which constitute about 18.73 of the geographical area of the division (8,900 Km²). The division consists of two sub-divisions, namely, Raibag and Ramdurga sub-divisions, and consists of six ranges, namely, Athani, Chikodi, Gokak, Raibag, Ramadurga and Soudathi ranges. There is one wildlife sanctuary in the division, namely, Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary (29.78 ha). It is an island within the reservoir of Ghataprabha river and harbors varieties of avian fauna.
